Dragon Point Merritt Island

The Legendary Space Coast Landmark Is Now Offered as a $7 Million Luxury Estate

For generations, Dragon Point has been one of Florida’s Space Coast’s most recognizable waterfront landmarks.

Whether you’ve admired it from the water, spotted it while crossing the Pineda Causeway, worn the famous Dragon Point T-shirt, or simply heard stories growing up, chances are Dragon Point already means something to you.

Now, this legendary property has entered an entirely new chapter.

The iconic Dragon Point estate is currently being offered as a $7 million luxury new construction opportunity, giving one future owner the chance to build on one of the most recognizable pieces of waterfront property anywhere on Florida’s Space Coast.

This article explores both the extraordinary listing and the fascinating history that made Dragon Point a local legend.

Dragon Point Is Officially on the Market

This isn’t simply another luxury waterfront listing.

Dragon Point represents nearly a century of local identity, waterfront living, and Space Coast history.

The current offering presents an extraordinary opportunity to create a custom luxury estate on one of Brevard County’s most recognizable waterfront locations.

What Makes Dragon Point So Special?

Few homes become local landmarks.

Dragon Point has accomplished something very few properties ever achieve—it has become part of the culture of Florida’s Space Coast.

For decades, residents, boaters, anglers, photographers, and visitors have recognized Dragon Point as a symbol of Merritt Island.

Its location at the meeting of the Banana River and Indian River Lagoon makes it one of the most recognizable waterfront properties in the region.

The History of Dragon Point

Long before it became one of the Space Coast’s most talked-about real estate listings, Dragon Point was already a local legend.

Located at the southern tip of Merritt Island where the Indian River Lagoon meets the Banana River Lagoon, Dragon Point has served as a recognizable landmark for generations of boaters, pilots, anglers, and local residents. Even today, the point remains marked as “Dragon Point” on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) navigational charts.

The property’s most famous resident was “Annie,” a massive green concrete dragon created in 1971 by Florida artist Lewis VanDercar and property owner Aynn Christal. Constructed from approximately 20 tons of concrete and steel, Annie measured nearly 35 feet tall and 65 feet long, quickly becoming one of the Space Coast’s most recognizable landmarks.

Over the years, Annie grew into much more than a sculpture. Under owner Warren McFadden, the dragon was expanded with a longer neck and tail, four dragon hatchlings, and two prehistoric characters affectionately known as Fred and Wilma. On special occasions, Annie even “breathed fire,” delighting generations of local families and visitors.

The inspiration for the sculpture came from a local Native American legend suggesting that seeing a dragon rising from the mist where the Indian and Banana Rivers meet was a sign of good fortune.

Unfortunately, in 2002, Annie suffered severe damage during a storm, with vandalism believed to have contributed to the collapse. Despite several ambitious plans to restore the dragon—including proposals for a luxury resort, a rebuilt dragon, and later a new dragon named Rojak—none ultimately came to fruition.

Today, nearly a quarter century after Annie disappeared from the shoreline, Dragon Point stands at another historic crossroads.

The property is once again being offered for sale, this time as an extraordinary luxury waterfront build-to-suit opportunity, with concepts ranging from a spectacular custom estate to an option that could once again feature a dragon overlooking one of the most iconic waterfront locations on Florida’s Space Coast.

Whether or not another dragon ultimately rises from Dragon Point, its place in Space Coast history has already been secured.

Dragon Point Through the Eyes of Locals

Dragon Point isn’t famous because of its square footage.

It’s famous because nearly everyone on the Space Coast has a Dragon Point story.

Some remember:

  • Passing it by boat
  • Fishing nearby
  • Seeing it from the causeway
  • Wearing Dragon Point apparel
  • Family stories
  • Local legends

The $7 Million Vision

The current listing offers something truly unique.

Rather than simply preserving an iconic address, the property presents a vision for a spectacular new luxury waterfront residence designed for one of the most prestigious homesites on Florida’s Space Coast.

The proposed concept blends modern luxury with one of the region’s most historic locations, creating what could become the next chapter in Dragon Point’s remarkable story.
